who we are
we are passionate about acknowledging the existence of others. we are dignity advocates. we are in the fight against homelessness. we are project outpour. project outpour serves charlotte’s homeless community with mobile shower access to cultivate friendship and restore dignity.
our beloved queen city has been active in its efforts to prevent and ultimately end homelessness. there are many incredible initiatives and programs to help our homeless neighbors, yet many of our homeless friends find themselves without adequate or convenient access to showers. we fill a specific need while serving a broader purpose; and everything we do is guided by these three values:
- humanity – we operate with the understanding that our neighbors on the street are not to be ignored as if they don’t exist. their existence and experience as fellow human beings is vital to our community. we believe that being clean is a basic human right, not a privilege. we recognize that at the core of humanity is the desire to be seen, heard, loved and accepted.
- love – we believe we are to “love thy neighbor” and our words, actions and mission are guided by this basic, yet profound principle. one of easiest ways to model that is by providing our yet-to-be-housed friends with access to showers; something every person deserves.
- connection – we create collaborative partnerships throughout our city to increase access to services and to better serve our neighbors. we wholeheartedly support the housing first initiative, and are in the fight to end homelessness. equally, we aim to build authentic connections with those we serve to build trust and restore hope.
we believe a shower can be a conduit to building relationships (and trust) among our yet-to-be-housed friends, particularly those that don’t actively seek out help. quite literally, meeting our neighbors where they are to get them to where they need to be just makes sense. our vision is to be a catalyst for change in the lives of our neighbors, one shower at a time.
meet our founder
founder + ceo, laureen jenkins, realized her call to action while working with the homeless in dallas, texas. on a hot summer day, she was speaking with a homeless gentleman and as the conversation progressed, lent itself to her asking him when the last time he showered. nearly two weeks. almost 14 days since he felt clean (it’s not just about being clean but feeling clean). her heart sunk and immediately was overcome with an overwhelming feeling she needed to do something. that evening, she spent hours researching and learned there are a handful of cities in the country providing shower access for yet-to-be-housed men, women and families. life (thankfully!) brought her back to charlotte, the city she adores. once back home, she immediately got involved with a local nonprofit serving the homeless. still inspired by her conversation with the homeless man in dallas, the idea of making something happen in the queen city only grew stronger. voila…here we are!
she’s a christian first and a work in progress second. she’s an open book, a lover of animals (she may or may not consider her cat her child), a comedy improviser and has a slight obsession with blankets. she’s dedicated to living authentically and serving others. “as cliché as it sounds, living a life that makes my little corner of the world better for others is what i want my life to be about. in the end, nothing else matters.”
