we’re excited about our first official post! we wanted to provide you with an update on what we’ve been up to and what things are on the horizon.
since our founder’s trip to san francisco last fall, we’ve been fired up. we are, nearly, legally formed. the longest part of the process is waiting on the tax-exempt application to be approved. it’s a process that can take six to eight months from the time the government receives the application. we are about two months in and eagerly check our mailbox daily in the event we set a record for fastest application approval (we can dream, right?!).
our founder and her mom traveled to san fran last fall to spend time with the folks of lava mae – a nonprofit that provides street hygiene services for their city’s homeless.
now, our focus is on creating a compelling fundraising campaign and prospecting grants we’re eligible to apply for. we’ve had a lot of productive meetings and are excited about the meetings on the calendar in the coming weeks. we’re really looking forward to all may will bring us. our founder will spend a day with cmpd traveling to various homeless encampments and she’ll be on the news (you bet we’ll share a link to the story after it’s aired!) on may 18th.
if you’re reading this and thinking, “man, i really need to get involved”, we’d love to chat with you! we currently have five board members but are looking for, at minimum, another two. we’re looking for someone with a financial background as well as someone with development/fundraising experience. and of course, money makes the mission go ’round so if you feel inclined to make a pledge or donation (don’t worry, we fully expect to have our tax-exempt status approved in plenty of time for tax write-off purposes), please hop on over to our donate now page. just to give you an understanding of what your donation will do:
- our customized shower trailer is 22 feet long and has three private mini bathrooms each with its own sink, mirror, toilet and shower. the cost is $51,000.
- we will need a pick up truck to pull the trailer. the kind of (used) pick up we need costs approximately $30,000. although we are hoping one will be donated to us.
- all other costs are considered operational – insurance, maintenance, registration, fuel, salary (of one employee and a part-time driver), on-site security, marketing and events, just to name a few. after the trailer is purchased, all funding will fall here.
as you consider getting involved, we hope you’ll consider the words of one our homeless friends, turtle. he spent a day with us in march helping with photos for our website. he said something we’ll never forget – “what you’re doing matters because we matter”. we couldn’t agree more…
don’t let that pensive face scare you, turtle is funny, full of life and has a gentle soul. if you see him in uptown charlotte, say hello; acknowledge his existence.
